| Is the purpose just to remove truck traffic from downtown Wilmington? |
 | No. The Purpose & Need currently includes the following goals:
- Reduce accidents and improve safety
- Enhance a pedestrian-friendly small town atmosphere for downtown businesses and Wilmington College
- Relieve congestion, particularly truck traffic, in and around Wilmington
- Reduce truck traffic and noise through residential neighborhoods
- Enhance interface of air/truck transportation between DHL and interstate highway movements
- Support regional economic growth, particularly with DHL, while avoiding encouragement of sprawl and loss of farmland
And, in fact, of the nearly 30,000 vehicles per day projected to use relocated SR 73 in 2030, only 10 percent to 20percent are trucks. While this is relatively high truck percentage, there is still 80 percent or more of the traffic that is non-truck. |
